Italy’s “5 Stars” movement has begun voting on whether to support a government led by former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi in a move that could be one of the last steps before the government is formed.

Draghi, who won a mandate to lead a new government after Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte resigned, held two rounds of talks with the parties to form a new administration.
A group of parties from left to right pledged to support him and he would not need the “five-star” votes to gain a majority in both houses of parliament.
However, supporting the largest group in Parliament will help Draghi build a broader coalition, capable of facing the double economic crises and the Coronavirus in the country.
The Five Star Movement leadership is urging its members to vote yes, saying the party should lead the recovery of Italy, which expects to receive more than 200 billion euros ($ 242.56 billion) from the European Union’s economic recovery fund.
“We have to participate in this new government to defend the policies that we have introduced in recent years and make good use of the EU funds,” said outgoing Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio of the Five Star Movement.
About 119,600 members will be able to vote by 6 pm on an online platform on whether to support a coalition government that includes a Ministry for Environmental Transformation, one of the five stars movement’s main demands.
