‘It’s just a phase’: Ja Morant’s friend and award-winning rapper Moneybagg Yo reveals he has spoken to NBA star amid latest gun controversy – and Grizzlies star told him ‘Ima get it right’
Multi-award-winning rapper MoneyBagg Yo has weighed in on the ongoing Ja Morant situation during an interview with Complex, revealing he has spoken to the young NBA star.
Morant has been suspended by the Memphis Grizzlies and is awaiting punishment from the NBA after he was seen holding a firearm in an Instagram live video, despite the league’s CBA not specifically giving guidance on the matter.
The Memphis born rapper, however, said at the start of his own elevation to stardom he made similar mistakes, while also mentioning he spoke with Morant about the current situation.
‘Unfortunately, the situation going on with it right now… He 23, I feel like it’s just a phase,’ said Moneybagg during the interview.
‘Like, when I was 23…. It was like I was just doing stuff and people had to tell me, or I had to bump my head. So I’m grateful to make it out those situations. Some people don’t even shake back from certain situations, you feel me.’

Despite a career that has seen him win awards like 2021 Trapper of the Year, and the Complex Best Rapper of the Decade award, on top of being nominated for a Grammy, Moneyybagg admitted that he made similar decisions at the start of his fame.
‘I had my homeboy like, I’m still pulling up to the traps. But I done went platinum and I done did this show, I done been with this person. I’d have been on interviews with you and everything, I still go back to Memphis and I’m in the trap.
‘I’m in the hood, I’m pulling on the block, smoking, chilling and he’s like “bro what you doing?” I had home boy like “bro what you got going on?”‘
He would continue on to say: ‘Ja gonna snap out of it, and of course I gave him encouraging words. He was like, “I appreciate that big bro, I got you. I’m gonna get it right.”‘
Moneybagg is not the only well-noted rapper to comment on Morant and his situation, as Grammy Award winner Lil Wayne also recently spoke on the Grizzlies guard.

Legendary rapper Lil Wayne recently commented on the ongoing Ja Morant saga, stating to many of those criticizing him: ‘Do y’all know that boy? Cause I don’t’
‘Do y’all know that boy? Cause I don’t,’ Wayne said emphatically. ‘I know him from dunking and jumping, and I only started knowing him when I started paying attention to him in his last year of college.
‘He come from a town with 3,000 people. Like, what? What y’all expect? Y’all gave him $200million. I just said, a town with 3,000 people. You expect him to be responsible? Now we tripping.’
‘That’s magic. Cause I could tell you now, I come from a real well-raised, beautiful mother, nice, you know what I mean?
‘My mama would bust her ass to make sure everything around me was nice, and I still was a knucklehead. I shot myself. And that young man, I could imagine if I came from a f***ing place with 3,000 people and I became who I am.’
