Tennis star Ons Jabeur has announced she is taking a step back from the sport to prioritize her personal well-being after a difficult period.
In a social media post, the former world number two revealed she has not felt happy on the court for some time. “For the past two years I’ve been pushing myself so hard, fighting through injuries and facing many other challenges,” Jabeur wrote. “Tennis is such a beautiful sport. But right now I feel it’s time to take a step back and finally put myself first: to breathe, to heal, and to rediscover the joy of simply living.”
The decision came as the WTA confirmed Jabeur’s withdrawal from the upcoming Montreal Open. The tour also noted that the 30-year-old Tunisian is currently the only player in the top 99 who has not entered next month’s US Open.
This break follows a challenging season for the two-time Wimbledon finalist, whose world ranking has dropped from a career-high of second to 71st. Her struggles were evident at this year’s Wimbledon, where she retired from her first-round match after battling extreme heat on the tournament’s hottest-ever opening day.
