Jalisco’s clothing industry suffers from labor shortages

Guadalajara, Jal. Although the clothing industry hopes by the end of 2022 to recover the production indicators it had in 2019, the sector faces a serious problem in finding labor and clothing factories only have half the workforce they had before the pandemic.

“A company that had 100 employees before the pandemic now has 50 and we don’t know where the other 50 are, but we have a great need for labor like all industries,” said the president of the National Chamber of the Industry of Dress (Canaive), Jalisco delegation, Roberto Santana Flores.

“Currently, the main obstacle we face is the lack of manpower, human talent. There are no people. We go ranching, in the mountains trying to get people to come to work and bringing them and taking them and offering them many things ”, he added.

He stressed that in Jalisco there is an important industrial corridor related to fashion, where most of the entity’s clothing is produced, made up of the municipalities of Zapotlanejo, Ayotlán, San Miguel El Alto, Villa Hidalgo and Encarnación de Díaz, as well as Guadalajara.

According to the president of Canaivethe smuggling of clothing caused large companies to disappear, which is why, he said, the sector is made up only of MSMEs that stand out for the quality of their workforce.

“We are recognized in the Republic because we have the best workforce, we are not cheap, we do not have a reputation for being cheap, rather a high price because we provide good quality and this has helped us out,” he commented.

The leader of the sector insisted on the need to raise awareness so that garments manufactured in the country are consumed in Mexico.

“Industrialists are complaining that we sell little, because there are no people, but we are buying things that are produced in another country and that only benefits the economies of those countries and not ours,” said Roberto Santana Flores.
