The Utah Jazz have closed the transfer of Miye Oni to the Oklahoma City Thunder, as reported by the journalist from The Athletic Tony Jones.
The forward does not have his contract worth 1.78 million for the 2021-22 season fully guaranteed. This was fully guaranteed this Friday, so the Utah management has decided to make a move.
Presumably, the Jazz had agreed with the player to leave through a trade to save luxury tax. Had he been cut, his minimum salary (around $ 800,000) would have been prorated for the rest of the course, counting against the already highly committed aspect of the organization’s salary.
A resolution that the Thunder will opt for. As reported by journalist Adrian Wojnarowski, the Thunder will cut Oni, as they barely have $ 87.8 million committed. In addition, the general manager Sam Presti will also receive another future round of the draft as part of the operation, this time, a pick of the second round of 2028.
With no counterpart in the form of a player, the Jazz open a second free gap in the roster, in addition to receiving a trade exception for the value of the Oni contract. And considering that Danny Ainge was recently hired as a major mainstay of the headquarters, this move is expected to be a mere formality in positioning itself for higher caliber additions.
For their part, the Thunder have had to fire a player in order to make room for Oni even though they don’t have him. Gabriel Deck, with an unsecured contract, has been the victim.
