(CNN) — John Stamos and twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are like a family now, but it wasn’t always like that.
During a recent episode of the “Good Guys” podcast, Stamos spoke with Josh Peck and Ben Soffer about their early efforts to get the twin sisters back on “Full House” after being fired from the show at the actor’s request.
The Olsens shared the role of Michelle Tanner, the youngest member of the “Full House” family, and Stamos played Uncle Jesse Katsopolis.
Stamos said that while filming the pilot for the show, he and his co-star Dave Coulier, who played Joey Gladstone, were doing a scene with one of the twins getting her diaper changed.
“We took the baby downstairs and I think I was holding her under the arms and Dave was holding her little feet,” Stamos recalled. “We took her to the kitchen and hosed her down, turned on a fan and wrapped her in paper towels. She was screaming. The two were screaming. They wanted to be anywhere else but there, and so did I.”
Stamos suggested that they replace the 11-month-old twins with someone else.
“I couldn’t deal with it,” he said. “I thought it wasn’t going to work. And so they got rid of them.”
Fortunately for the Olsens, Stamos said her replacement wasn’t up to the task and the twins finally returned to the show that launched their careers to fame.
