British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has urged members of his Eurosceptic Conservative Party to put the public interest before theirs, in an effort to stave off any potential rebellion over his post-Brexit trade deal with the continent.
According to what was reported by the British newspaper The Telegraph, Johnson told the Conservatives that the agreement announced on Christmas Eve fulfills all the commitments made to regain control of money, laws, borders and fish.
Johnson sent a direct message to would-be rebels, stating that he had accepted the devil lurking in the details but was certain that the agreement would withstand the most harsh scrutiny of legal vultures, and demanded that they remember what public opinion wanted to do.
The European Research Group of pro-Brexit conservatives is scheduled to reconvene its group of lawyers upon publication of the text of the agreement, when senior members of parliament examine the agreement line by line before deciding on a vote on it when Parliament convenes on December 30th.
Many of them have already expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of time that they will have to review the 1,246-page document, which indicates that they are actually required to vote on the basis of confidence.
Johnson received strong support on Friday, when a leading group of economists predicted that the British economy would rise before its closest competitor, France, over the next 15 years.
The Center for Economics and Business Research said that by 2035, the current gap of 9% between the British and French economies will widen to 23%, challenging many supporters of staying in the European Union.
