Actress Karen Gillan has revealed she wrote an entire television pilot while caring for her newborn daughter, Clementine. The Guardians of the Galaxy star, 37, who welcomed her first child with husband Nick Kocher, 38, last December, found a unique way to balance work and new motherhood.
Gillan explained that in the weeks following her daughter’s birth, the infant would often only sleep while being held. She used these “contact naps” as an opportunity to develop a new horror script. “I was like, ‘what can I do right now to pass the time? I know I’ll create something’,” she said, noting that she would type on her phone or formulate ideas to write down later.
She described the project as “the biggest undertaking of my life” and “the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”
The Scottish actress, who lives in Los Angeles, also shared a lighthearted take on her daughter growing up in the United States. “She’s going to be like, ‘Hey mom,’ and I’ll be like, ‘It’s mum’,” Gillan joked.
Reflecting on her public profile, Gillan said that while she can move around London and New York without being recognized, she is well-known in her smaller hometown of Inverness. She also expressed surprise at being described as glamorous, stating, “I just don’t view myself that way.”
