Ken Yeang, father of Ecodesign

In recent years, the real estate has shown signs of becoming more aware of its impact on the environment, so developers have been determined to build buildings con efficient and sustainable systems.

In Mexico alone, a total of 509 properties are registered with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, according to the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

However, the architect Ken Yeang, considered “The father of Ecodesign”, stated that the development of green buildings not enough to create really green cities.

“Ecological design is not building green real estatewhich is what many of my colleagues do, with this we will never be able to make cities be green”, he commented during his participation in the Helvex 2022 Meeting.

According to the expert, the main factor for the well-being of urban environments is to improve infrastructure and stop thinking of buildings as individual entities.

“We must make nature holistic, as a single identity. As human beings we assume that we can fragment nature, we have done it with roads, drains, sewers, impermeable services, but we need to correct this with bridges and ecological infrastructure”, said the architect.

One of Ken Yeang’s theories is to base architectural design on ecology sciencein this way, tries to replicate and increase ecosystems to reconnect cities with nature.

In the words of the expert, the challenge to achieve this is to integrate key factors such as nature itself, human society, water, the built environment and Energy production.

“What we humans do is we remove vegetation, kill all species within an area and replace it with amenities that are totally devoid of organic life, something we need to reverse,” he added.

Under this theory, the architect has created projects in which natural habitats are created with vegetation on terraces, balconies and common areas of the buildings in order to attract animal species that are not dangerous to human life, such as birds.

Despite design and urban planning efforts, Ken Yeang stressed that nature has a capacity that is impossible for humans to replicate and that as humans deplete the earth’s resources, survival will be increasingly difficult.

“It creates and absorbs solar energy, produces oxygen and improves biodiversity; but, if we continue deforesting the planet, this capacity decreases. If we were to emulate the environment, this would be the biggest challenge we have. It becomes clear that in no way can technology match what nature can do,” he concluded.
