Londres (CNN) — US actor Kevin Spacey was released on bail in his first appearance in a London court on Thursday after being charged with four counts of sexual assault against three men.
Spacey spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and London address during a brief procedural hearing, and a date of July 14 was set for his next hearing.
Spacey’s attorney told the court he “strongly denies” all allegations of criminality.
He was granted unconditional bail after his attorney told the court that he would need to return to the United States between his trial dates to work and see his family.
The 62-year-old “House of Cards” actor was also charged last month with engaging in nonconsensual penetrative sex.
The charges relate to two alleged incidents in London in 2005, another two in 2008 and one in Gloucestershire, west of England, in 2013.
The alleged victim of the 2005 incidents is now 40 years old, while the two men allegedly involved in the 2008 and 2013 incidents are now 30 years old, the London Metropolitan Police said.
Spacey appeared Thursday at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in a light blue suit, dark tie and glasses, and was greeted by a large crowd of journalists and photographers.
The British Crown Prosecution Service authorized the charges against Spacey at the end of May, but they could not be formally applied until this Monday, when he was in the United Kingdom.
Spacey has won two Academy Awards for his roles in “The Usual Suspects” and “American Beauty,” and was artistic director of London’s Old Vic theater from 2003 to 2015.
He has also starred in the Netflix political series “House of Cards,” and returned to acting last year.
