Kim described the deteriorating relations between the two Koreas as a “new stage of change” and an “inevitable reality.”
The agency quoted Kim as saying that North Korea will not ignite any escalation unilaterally, but at the same time it does not seek to avoid war.
He made it clear that if the Republic of South Korea attempted to use the armed forces against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea or threaten its sovereignty and security, he would not hesitate to “annihilate the Republic of Korea with all our means and forces.”
According to the agency, Kim was accompanied by senior officials from the party and the army, on a tour to inspect ammunition factories on Monday and Tuesday. She also stated that the goal of this tour is to motivate arms industry workers to participate in “the struggle to achieve the goal of large production in the new year.”
In separate statements during the end-of-year meeting last December, the North Korean president announced that peaceful reunification was considered impossible, and added that the government would make a decisive change in its policy towards its southern neighbor.
Relations between the two Koreas have been deteriorating since Kim’s commitment to strengthening his country’s status as a nuclear power, and Pyongyang’s resumption of its advanced intercontinental ballistic missile tests.
