John Kirby, spokesman for the US National Security Council, said that Washington does not believe that the military attack launched by Israel on the Gaza Strip will eliminate the ideology of the Hamas movement, adding that the US administration “accepts” the idea that Hamas will continue to exist.
Kirby explained that the Israeli army can undermine Hamas’s ability to launch attacks inside Israel, but the movement “still has significant capabilities in the Gaza Strip.”
He added that the Israeli army is capable of “eliminating the threat that Hamas poses to the Israeli people,” but added, “Will its ideology be eliminated? No. Is there a possibility that the group will be eliminated? Probably not.”
The American official pledged that Washington would work to maintain the American military presence in the Middle East, noting that President Joe Biden continues to receive briefings on the situation in the region.
Kirby added that Washington does not want the war launched by Israel in the Gaza Strip to expand and spread to other fronts.
A spokesman for the US National Security Council said that talks to release Israeli detainees in the Gaza Strip are “ongoing and serious.”
