Jurgen Klopp shocked the football world – today, Friday – by announcing his departure from coaching the Liverpool team at the end of the season, saying that he had lost the energy to continue after more than 8 successful years in leading the competing club in the English Premier League.
Klopp (56 years old), who led Liverpool to the League Cup final last Wednesday, and who is very popular, informed the club management last November that he would end his career with Liverpool after 8 and a half years at the end of the current season.

Liverpool said that assistant coach Pippin Lijnders and Peter Kravitz will also leave the club at the same time.
Klopp said on the English club’s website: “The thing is, how shall I say it, I am running out of energy. I understand that it is a shock for many at this time to hear this for the first time, but I can explain it or at least try to do so.”

He added, “I love very much everything related to this club, I love everything related to the city, and I love everything related to our team’s fans. I love the team and I love the technical staff. I love everything, but having to make this decision shows that I am convinced of the necessity of taking this step.”
The veteran coach continued, “I have no problem now. Of course, I knew for a long time that I would have to announce this at some point. But I am completely fine now. I know that I will not be able to continue performing the task indefinitely.”
Klopp joined Liverpool in October 2015 and won the Champions League, the English Premier League, the Club World Cup, the FA Cup, the League Cup, the Super Cup, and the Community Shield.
Mike Gordon, president of Liverpool’s owner, Fenway Sports, said: “In keeping with Klopp’s wishes, we will reserve the overall honor for a more appropriate time. However, we would be remiss if we did not take this opportunity to reaffirm that his appointment remains one of the greatest blessings of our time as owners.”
He added, “The amazing achievements achieved in those years speak for themselves, as does the joy that Jurgen and his team brought to us all. His many achievements will never be taken for granted.”
Gordon continued, “Klopp won 7 titles with Liverpool, and we will always remember him as the coach who brought back the glory days to the club, and tasted success at home and abroad.”

Champions League
Liverpool lifted the Champions League title in 2019 by defeating Tottenham in the final, after finishing the previous edition in runner-up behind Real Madrid, and beating Chelsea on penalties in the European Super Cup.
In December 2019, Liverpool won the Club World Cup for the first time, and the 2019-2020 season ended the team’s wait, which had lasted for more than 30 years, to achieve the English Premier League title.
Liverpool won the league title for the first time since 1990, and the club’s first in the English Premier League era, ahead of Manchester City by 18 points.
Liverpool won the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022, and was close to achieving the quadruple, but lost the league title in the last round to Manchester City, and fell to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.
Last season was relatively bad, as the team ranked fifth in the league, but it returned to its best this season and tops the Premier League standings.
“For me, it was very important that I could help get this team back on the right track,” Klopp said of last season’s struggles.

“That was all I was thinking about. When I realized very early on what had happened, this is a really good team with huge potential, a super age group, super personalities and all that, then I could start thinking about myself again and this was the result. Not that,” he added. “What I want (to do), that’s just what I think is 100 percent right.”
The love Klopp has for the club and its fans means that despite not knowing what the future holds, he has made a promise to himself.
Klopp said, “What I know for sure is that I will not coach another team in England except Liverpool. This is not possible. My love for this club and my respect for the people is very great. I could not think about it for a moment. There is no chance.”
