Kyrie Irving gifts boxing legend Floyd Mayweather his jersey from his impressive Dallas Mavericks debut after the guard led his new team to victory with 24 points following his trade from the Brooklyn Nets
Kyrie Irving gave boxing legend Floyd Mayweather his jersey following his debut with the Dallas Mavericks Wednesday night.Â
Irving, 30, starred for Dallas in his first game as a Maverick as he led his new team to victory.Â
The guard had an instant impact as the game’s top scorer, dropping 24 points in the Mavericks’ 110-104 road win against the Los Angeles Clippers.Â
But instead of keeping the jersey from his incredible debut or even donating it to the Hall of Fame sometime in the future, Irving gifted it to Mayweather.Â
The former ring king was in attendance at Crypto.com Arena to watch Irving take to the floor for the first time since his trade from the Brooklyn Nets.Â

And Mayweather was one of the first people Irving sought out after the final buzzer had sounded.Â
Irving had already taken off his jersey and clutched it in his hand as he made his way over to Mayweather stood on the sideline.Â
The pair shared a lengthy embrace and exchanged some words with the moment appearing to be somewhat emotional.Â
Irving then passed his jersey to Mayweather before heading off to the locker room.Â
Mayweather has been a big supporter of Irving in recent years. He backed the embattled Nets star when he was going through his Covid-19 vaccine controversy.Â
Irving endured a rocky tenure in Brooklyn, beginning with his refusal to get the Covid-19 vaccine during the 2020-21 season which forced him out of the lineup for home games until New York mayor Eric Adams altered the city’s laws.
But Mayweather was in Irving’s corner throughout the controversy, releasing a video on social media backing the player’s decision.Â
‘Choice is defined as an act of selecting or making a decision when faced with two or more possibilities,’ Mayweather had wrote in the post. ‘America gave us the choice to take the vaccine or not take the vaccine. As time moves on, that choice is gradually being stripped from us.’
The 30-year-old produced moments of brilliance and was the game’s top scorer with 24 points
Irving had clearly not forgotten Mayweather’s support and rewarded the former boxer with his jersey.Â
Mayweather has been making his way around the NBA this week as he was on hand to witness LeBron James break the league’s all-time scoring record Tuesday.Â
He congratulated the Lakers star after James’s record-breaking shot with the pair also embracing on the sideline.Â
Irving forced his way out of Brooklyn Sunday by demanding a trade from the Nets last Friday.Â
The Clippers, Lakers and Phoenix Suns were said to be interested but the Mavs beat out the competition, trading away Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, and a 2029 first-round pick for the NBA champion.
