Queretaro, Qro. In the second quarter of the year, working poverty increased in 11 states compared to pre-pandemic levels, a phenomenon that was accentuated mainly in entities in the Bajío, central and southern regions of the country.
Working poverty refers to the percentage of the population whose labor income is less than the cost of the food basket, reports the National Council for Social Development Policy (Coneval).
The most significant increase occurred in Guanajuato, where its population in working poverty increased 4.62 percentage points between the second quarter of 2019, when it was 33.33%, and the second quarter of 2022, when it reached 37.96%, according to Coneval records. .
The second entity with the highest increase was Hidalgo with a rebound of 2.25 percentage points in the periods analyzed, climbing from 47.79 to 50.05% of its population in working poverty.
Also with upward variations follow Quintana Roo with 1.84 points (from 26.52 to 28.37%), Querétaro with 1.72 points (from 36.61 to 38.32%), Puebla with 1.61 points (from 46.64 to 48.25%), Mexico City with 1.45 points ( from 31.36 to 32.81 percent).
The list continues with increases below 1 percentage point in Veracruz with 0.70 points (from 51.17 to 51.87%), Nuevo León with 0.68 points (from 23.49 to 24.17%), Durango with 0.42 points (from 35.31 to 35.72%), Aguascalientes with 0.33 points (from 36.90 to 37.23%) and Guerrero with an increase of 0.04 points (from 62.42 to 62.46 percent).

In contrast, the remaining 21 entities reduced –as at the national level– the percentage of the population in working poverty, between the second quarter of 2019, before the pandemic, and the same period of 2022.
The most pronounced drop was registered in Nayarit with a decrease of 5.85 percentage points (from 34.00 to 28.15% of its population under those conditions); with a similar behavior, San Luis Potosí with -5.37 points (from 46.24 to 40.87%), Morelos with -4.35 points (from 55.55 to 51.21%), Jalisco with -4.11 points (from 26.97 to 22.86 percent).
They continue, Zacatecas with -2.71 points (from 48.12 to 45.42%), Oaxaca with -2.63 points (from 61.74 to 59.10%), Chiapas with -2.43 points (from 69.19 to 66.76%), Michoacán with -2.40 points (from 37.59 to 35.19%), Tlaxcala with -2.39 points (from 49.81 to 47.42%); Tamaulipas with -2.19 points (from 34.17 to 31.99%), Yucatán with -2.13 percentage points (from 36.93 to 34.80 percent).
With variations below 2 points, Sinaloa follows, which had a reduction of -1.88 points in the percentage of the population in working poverty (it fell from 29.70 to 27.82%); Similarly, Colima with -1.84 points (from 26.01 to 24.17), Chihuahua with -1.51 points (from 25.62 to 24.11%), Baja California Sur with -1.30 points (from 17.07 to 15.77%), Campeche with -1.23 points ( from 42.20 to 40.97%), Tabasco with -1.02 points (from 45.92 to 44.90 percent).
As well as Baja California with a reduction of 0.56 percentage points (from 20.09 to 19.53%), State of Mexico with -0.43 points (from 36.09 to 35.66%), Coahuila with -0.37 points (from 26.42 to 26.05%) and Sonora with a decrease of -0.12 points (from 28.84 to 28.72 percent).
While, in the country, working poverty fell 0.69 percentage points, between the second quarter of 2019, when it was around 39% of the population, and the second quarter of the current year, when it reached 38.31 percent.
The highest indicators persist in the south
At the end of the second quarter of 2022, entities in the south and southeast of Mexico have the highest levels of population in working poverty, the Coneval records stand out.
Chiapas has the highest indicator, with 66.76% of its population whose labor income is insufficient to acquire the food basket, as well as Guerrero with 62.46%, Oaxaca with 59.10%, Veracruz with 51.87%, Morelos with 51.21% and Hidalgo with 50.05 percent. .
Puebla follows with 48.25% of its population in working poverty, Tlaxcala with 47.42%, Zacatecas with 45.42%, Tabasco with 44.90%, Campeche with 40.97%, San Luis Potosí with 40.87% and Querétaro with 38.32 percent.
In addition, 19 entities register a labor poverty indicator lower than the national one, which was 38.31% in the April-June period of this year; among them, Guanajuato with 37.96%, Aguascalientes with 37.23%, Durango with 35.72%, State of Mexico with 35.66%, Michoacán with 35.19%, Yucatán with 34.80%, Mexico City with 32.81%, Tamaulipas with 31.99 percent.
Below 30% of its population in these conditions, Sonora with 28.72%, Quintana Roo with 28.37%, Nayarit with 28.15%, Sinaloa with 27.82%, Coahuila with 26.05%, Nuevo León with 24.17%, Colima with 24.17%, Chihuahua with 24.11%, Jalisco with 22.86%, Baja California with 19.53; and Baja California Sur with 15.77% reports the lowest level of working poverty.
