London, May 23 (.).- The president of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, offered his country on Monday as a refuge of “trust and hope” in times of uncertainty, at a conference before British investors and businessmen in London.
At the event, scheduled as part of his visit to the United Kingdom -the first he has made to Europe since he became president-, Lacalle Pou reiterated that Mercosur “is not going as fast” as he would like in forging new trade agreements, who defended the direct negotiations of his government.
“We try to go together (with Mercosur); we would have a much stronger position if we go with our partners, but today they don’t want to go so fast. So we have started (talking) with Turkey, we continue with China, now the United Kingdom… ..”, he pointed.
At the conference “Uruguay, a reliable gateway to South America – Opportunities in green finance”, organized by Canning House, Lacalle Pou was seconded, among others, by the Foreign Minister, Francisco Bustillo, and the Minister of Economy and Finance , Arbeleche Lily.
“People are looking for stable and peaceful places to invest and live. Our country is one of the strongest democracies in the world, with strict respect for the separation of powers, and very strong institutions and political parties,” said the president.
For Lacalle Pou, that stability that reigns in Uruguay precedes his arrival at the Presidency and will continue after his mandate.
“We can offer hope. We are generating facilities to live, we are putting tax exemptions to invest,” he added.
The conference also served for the Uruguayan president to reiterate his “strong commitment to the environment”, as well as his country’s intention to “open up to the world”.
“We believe in environmental stewardship, long before we entered government, and we share that with the UK. When we talk about green finance, we go together,” he said.
Lacalle Pou previously met with the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, with whom he focused on trade relations between the two countries and the investment potential offered by Uruguay.
