What has happened in the last hours in Ukraine

On the 73rd day of the war initiated by Russia against Ukraine, these are the key data at 8:00 a.m. this Saturday, May 7:

Zelensky says that any agreement with Moscow will depend on its troops withdrawing to previous positions. Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, has stated that any peace agreement with Russia will depend on Russian forces withdrawing to pre-invasion positions. Zelensky, according to the BBC, made these statements in a conversation with a think tank From london. The Ukrainian president has stated that he is the leader of “Ukraine, not a mini Ukraine”, referring to a possible country broken off as a result of Russia’s annexation of parts of its territory. However, Zelensky has made no reference to the Crimean peninsula, illegally annexed by Russia in 2014 after a referendum that the international community does not recognize.

Odesa approves a curfew between May 8 and 10 for fear of bombing. The Odessa region has approved a curfew that will be in effect between 10 p.m. on May 8 and 5 p.m. on May 10. The authorities consider that there is a high risk of Russian bombardment in the territory for those days. According to The Kyiv Independentthe Kremlin could launch a military attack on the 9th, which commemorates the victory of the Soviet Union in World War II, a date that is celebrated by Russia with large military parades.

Biden announces another $150 million in military aid to Ukraine, but warns that the funds are almost exhausted. US President Joe Biden has announced a new military aid package for Ukraine, valued by sources close to the US government at around $150 million. The president has warned: “My government has almost exhausted the funds that can be used to send security assistance.” The package includes artillery ammunition, radars and more equipment. Biden has indicated that “for Ukraine to succeed in this new phase of the war, international allies, including the United States, must demonstrate their unity and their determination to keep weapons and ammunition flowing to Ukraine, without interruption.”

Russia signs a Security Council declaration in favor of a peaceful solution. In a rare exercise of consensus, the 15 members of the UN Security Council, including Russia, have adopted a statement showing their “serious concern about the maintenance of peace and security in Ukraine”. The text, proposed by Mexico and Norway, also corroborates the support of the highest executive body of the United Nations for the mediation work undertaken between the parties by its Secretary General, António Guterres. “The Security Council recalls that all Member States have assumed, by virtue of the Charter [fundacional] of the United Nations, the obligation to solve its international controversies by peaceful means”, says the text.

Crimea’s pro-Russian leader claims Kherson is “liberated” from nationalists. The pro-Russian leader and head of the autonomous government of the Republic of Crimea, annexed by Moscow in 2014, Sergei Aksionov, has claimed that the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson “has been liberated from nationalists” and “kyiv control”. In an interview published early this Saturday by the Russian agency Sputnik, the leader assured that “today there are no Ukrainian authorities that carry out any inspection or control of documents. Life in the Kherson region is peaceful again.”

In the photograph, which is from Efrem Lukatskyfrom the Associated Press, a group of people say goodbye at St. Michael’s Cathedral in kyiv to a Ukrainian soldier who was killed by Russian troops.
