After talks with his Finnish counterpart Becka Haavisto in Petersburg, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the position of some NATO countries is impeding the final implementation of Finland’s initiative on aviation safety over the Baltic Sea.
Lavrov reminded that these countries do not want to agree to fly all military aircraft with the operation of transmitters and receivers.
“We talked about steps that are necessary to enhance security in Europe and calm tensions in this region. In this regard, we stressed the importance of the well-known initiative of Finnish President Sauli Niinistö on aviation safety over the Baltic Sea.”
The Russian Foreign Minister noted that the Finnish initiative has been implemented to a large extent, and stressed that “the position of NATO countries, which do not want to agree to all military aircraft flying over sea waters, to operate transmitters, does not allow it to be fully implemented until the end.”
