Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov received a phone call from the US President’s Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, John Kerry, during which the two parties discussed the implementation of the Paris climate agreement.

According to a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov welcomed the new US administration’s aspiration to return to the Paris Agreement, as it is “a pivotal international agreement that provides the solid international legal framework for finding a permanent solution to the climate file.”
The two sides stressed the importance of building broad international cooperation on the climate file, taking into account environmental, economic, social and political factors, and the interests of all countries without exception.
Lavrov and Kerry also agreed to “arrange contacts between the relevant agencies in Russia and the United States after a series of upcoming activities related to preparations for the 26th session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Glasgow.”
The two sides also agreed to continue joint work within the framework of the Arctic Council in light of Russia’s assumption of the presidency of this regional organization for a period of two years since next May.
The Arctic Council is an international organization whose mission is to support international cooperation to protect the environment and ensure the sustainable development of the regions surrounding the Arctic.
The council includes 8 countries: Russia, the United States, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Canada, Norway and Finland.
