Lavrov said, in an interview with a Chinese media group published on Sunday evening, that the United States, by withdrawing from the agreement, not only stopped implementing its obligations, but also tried to prevent the rest of the countries from complying with the United Nations Security Council resolution.
Lavrov pointed out that officials in Western countries considered in general the exit of the United States from the agreement a fait accompli, but in fact it was “a flagrant violation of international law and displayed the state’s complete inability to reach agreements.”
The Russian Foreign Minister added, “I hope that the US administration, which has expressed its desire to return to the nuclear agreement, will implement its intention.”
On February 18, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken informed Britain, France and Germany that the administration of the President of the United States, Joe Biden, was ready to negotiate with Iran on the two countries returning to abide by the nuclear agreement signed in 2015.
The nuclear agreement is an international mechanism to ensure that Iran does not work to develop a nuclear weapon. Tehran has previously said repeatedly that it is capable of developing this type of weapon, but it does not seek to do so because “the manufacture of weapons of mass destruction contradicts the principles of Islam.”
Tehran began to reduce its obligations under the agreement in 2019 in response to the withdrawal of the United States from it during the era of former President Donald Trump, who accused Iran of supporting terrorism and seeking to obtain a nuclear weapon, and imposing painful economic sanctions on it.
