Reuters confirmed the leakage of a video in which an Ethiopian army general admitted that Eritrean forces entered Tigray without an invitation during the military operation that the Addis Ababa government carried out there last November.
Reuters reported that the video clip, which was circulated on social media, documents part of General Pillai Seyoum’s speech during a meeting held at the Tigray Center in the city of Maqli in late December, indicating at the same time that it was unable to verify the authenticity of the recording.
The agency quoted the general as saying in the recording: “Forces entered, which we did not want to enter. Are we the ones who called them? No, they entered on their own, and this must be clarified.”
The Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s office, the head of the emergency team in Operation Tigray, and an army spokesman, as well as Eritrean Information Minister Yamani Mesqal, declined to comment on the matter.
In 2018, Ethiopia and Eritrea signed a peace agreement that ended two decades of hostilities.
Both countries denied the participation of Eritrean forces in the struggle against the “Tigray People’s Liberation Front”, which the Addis Ababa government launched a military campaign against in November that culminated in its regaining control of the rebel region.
