The San Francisco Giants are upping the ante in the race for Aaron Judge’s signature – reportedly offering him a contract that’s $60million more than the Yankees.
It’s part of an attempt to get the northern California native to return to the Bay Area as the Giants look to make a return to the playoffs.
According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, the Giants are offering Judge a contract in the range of $360million to play in San Francisco.
That’s much more than a reported offer the Yankees recently gave him – as they offered a $300m contract to retain their newly crowned all-time single season home run record holder.
The die has been cast by the San Francisco Giants in their pursuit of MVP slugger Aaron Judge
Heyman claimed Judge was going to the Giants early Tuesday evening, but later retracted that statement saying, ‘Giants say they have not heard on Aaron Judge, my apologies for jumping the gun.’
Judge has been on something of a free agency tour these past few days – having visited the Giants and Dodgers last week.
Earlier Tuesday, TIME Magazine revealed their cover naming Judge the ‘athlete of the year’ for 2022. In a story, Judge said he wasn’t happy when the Yankees gave him a seven-year, $213m contract before the season started.
‘We kind of said, “Hey, let’s keep this between us,”‘ Judge told Time. ‘I was a little upset that the numbers came out. I understand it’s a negotiation tactic. Put pressure on me. Turn the fans against me, turn the media on me. That part of it I didn’t like.’
Judge’s record shattering season with the Yankees led to TIME naming him ‘Athlete of the Year’
That article in TIME also revealed Judge promised his now-wife Samantha Bracksieck that he’d be playing in San Francisco eventually.
Judge recalled that back in 2010 he said, ‘In 10 years, I’ll be married to Sam and playing for the San Francisco Giants. I was like, that’d better not get out.’
This season was a banner year for Judge, who was named to his fourth All-Star team, won his third Silver Slugger award, and led all of baseball in RBIs with 131 and of course in home runs with an AL record breaking 62.
That performance won him the AL Most Valuable Player award – becoming the first Yankee to take the prize since Alex Rodriguez in 2007 and the first Yankees outfielder to be named MVP since Mickey Mantle in 1962.
Negotiations from the Yankees will be in the hands of Brian Cashman, who is returning as GM
All negotiations for the Yankees will remain in the hands of Brian Cashman, with the team announcing Monday that the general manager would continue his tenure with them.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Cashman wasn’t aware that Judge planned on attending the league’s Winter Meetings this week.
That report also said that there aren’t any face-to-face meetings scheduled between Judge and the Yankees front office.
