Since its inception as an independent country, the history of Mexico is marked by the struggle between liberals and conservatives, in which the former always win in the end.

After independence, the York Rite Masonic lodge, linked to US interests, gave rise to the Liberal Party and the Scottish Rite Lodge, linked to European interests, gave rise to the Conservative Party.

Practically the entire 19th century is a struggle between liberals and conservatives, the former promoting, among other things, a federalist government like the one in the US, and the conservatives a centralist and monarchical government in the European style, which invites Maximilian to govern our country.

The Reform War achieved the final triumph of the liberals and the establishment of the constitution of 1857, liberal and federalist, however, the struggle between liberals and conservatives continued. The foundation of the PRI and the PAN maintains that political fight between liberals and conservatives.

Conservatives have been seen by certain sectors of the population as alien to nationalism and identified with the interests of high-income sectors. Being conservative has a negative connotation among a large part of the population, especially among those with lower incomes.

That is why López Obrador has tried to once again divide national political life in a fight between liberals and conservatives. He has had the ability to place all those who oppose his government on the side of the conservatives, appropriating for his movement the term liberal.

Regardless of the fact that many of his measures mean a setback and are conservative and centralist and that among the opponents there are people with a liberal and leftist thought, López Obrador has managed to monopolize the term liberal for his movement. His speech has had an effect among a large part of the population there, and his social programs, the support he continues to have from the people.

It will not be easy to attract the vote of the great majorities and win in 2024 as long as the people see the opposition as a conservative movement that wants to return to the privileges of the past.

As has been said on many occasions, the only way to win is by surpassing López Obrador and Morena on the left, and for that, a broader call is necessary than what Va por México and the civil organizations and leaders that are on the opposition side.

It is urgent to remove the conservative identity of the opposition and the leaders of civil society that are close to it. The president and Morena are going to try to turn the political fight in 2024 into a new fight between liberals and conservatives and if the opposition fails to break away from that term and have an advanced proposal, the most likely thing is that the liberals will win again.
