The eastern Libyan authorities announced tightening security measures in Benghazi after recording a series of killings in the city, at a time when the country is seeking to get out of the decade-long conflict and chaos.
The announcement came after dozens of bullet-penetrated bodies were discovered on March 18, and a few days after the assassination of Mahmoud al-Werfalli, the military commander in the forces of Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
The head of the Grand Security Committee – Benghazi, Brigadier General Abdul Basit Hameeda Bogres, said in a press conference: According to the instructions of Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, “We forced all the stores to install surveillance cameras, and the deadline is on Monday.”
He added that it is also “strictly forbidden” to roam vehicles without license plates and with darkened windows.
Regarding home arrests, he emphasized that “entry is strictly prohibited except by order of the prosecution, and the person who will enter is completely dressed and has a face uncovered.”
In the case of Mahmoud Al-Warfali, who was wanted by the International Criminal Court for serious crimes and torture, the Head of the Military Prosecution Office, Colonel Ali Madi, referred to the suspicion of two persons, Muhammad Abdul-Jalil Saad and Hanin Idris al-Abdali, the daughter of the lawyer Hanan al-Barasi, who was killed in Benghazi in November.
