ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Following their first 3-1 start and first stadium sellout in 18 years, the New Mexico Lobos will travel to San Jose, California, to open conference play against the San Jose State Spartans. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Pacific Time (8:05 p.m. Mountain Time) and will be broadcast on FS1.
The Lobos enter the matchup on a three-game winning streak, highlighted by a historic 35-10 road victory over UCLA—the program’s first win against a Power Four opponent in 17 years—and a 38-20 rivalry win against New Mexico State in front of 37,440 fans.
While San Jose State holds a 1-3 record, their performance has been stronger than their record suggests. The Spartans are just two missed field goals away from a 3-1 record and recently suffered a narrow 30-29 loss to Stanford after leading late in the fourth quarter.
As New Mexico looks to break another long-standing streak, the team faces a significant challenge in San Jose, where they have lost six consecutive games. The Lobos’ last victory on the Spartans’ home turf was in 1969, a drought that predates anyone in the team’s official travel party.
San Jose State is led by quarterback Walker Eget, who averages nearly 300 passing yards per game. His top target, Danny Scudero, has been one of college football’s most productive receivers, amassing 33 catches for 514 yards through four games. The Spartans’ defense is anchored by Taniela Latu, who has 4.0 tackles for loss, and Jordan Pollard, who has recorded 32 tackles and a fumble recovery.
The Lobo defense is coming off a dominant performance where they tied a school record with nine sacks. Defensive lineman Keyshawn James-Newby was a disruptive force, contributing 2.5 sacks and two pass breakups. On offense, quarterback Jack Layne delivered a stellar performance against New Mexico State, completing 23 of 30 passes for 303 yards and four touchdowns. Receiver Keagan Johnson also had a standout game, surpassing the 100-yard receiving mark.
Fans can join Coach Eck and host Robert Portnoy for Lobo Talk tonight, Tuesday, September 23, from 7 to 8 p.m. live from the Sandia Resort & Casino Sports Bar. This week’s guests include tight ends coach Jared Elliott and receiver Keagan Johnson. The show can be streamed online for those unable to attend in person.
