He’s coming home! Hitchin Town cheekily ask local lad Jack Wilshere if he wants to join the SEVENTH-tier club after the 28-year-old midfielder’s release from West Ham… and the former England star asks what time to report for training
- Wilshere was released from his West Ham deal on Monday after joining in 2018
- And now his local side have asked if he wants to join them in the seventh tier
- Hitchin’s claim to fame is taking part in the first FA Cup competition in 1871/72
- They also became the first side to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in 1905
Jack Wilshere’s wretched spell at West Ham United came to an end on Monday after the club released the 28-year-old from his three-year contract – and the England international could be back playing sooner than anyone expected.
Hitchin Town, Wilshere’s local side, cheekily offered him the chance to get his boots on and join their training sessions – and the man himself responded.
‘If you need somewhere to keep fit while you find a new club, we’re in the market for a 28-year-old creative midfielder from Hitchin. You know where we are,’ tweeted the club, who tagged Wilshere.
Jack Wilshere’s last game for West Ham was a 5-1 Carabao Cup win over Hull City in September
The former Arsenal man quickly got back in touch, jokily replying: ‘See you tomorrow. What time? Don’t need to be getting fined day one.’
Wilshere was unavailable for the majority of matches during his time at the Hammers after joining in the summer of 2018.
His first campaign following his move from Arsenal saw him miss most of the club’s games having picked up an ankle injury which required surgery and he missed the bulk of matches last season due to a groin problem.
Overall, Wilshere played 19 games for West Ham, scoring once.
Hitchin Town Football Club were founded in 1928 and have played at Top Field for their entire history. Their predecessors Hitchin Football Club came into existence in 1865 before being liquidated in 1911.
As a result, they claim to be one of the oldest football clubs in England, but this is disputed due to their reformation in the 1920s.
Nicknamed the Canaries, their claim to fame is being one of the clubs to contest the inaugural FA Cup competition in 1871/72.
They also became the first side to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, seeing off the Blues 3-2 in 1905.

The club currently ply their trade in the Southern League Premier Division Central, which is part of the third tier of non-league.
Arguably the club’s finest hour though came in the 1995/96 season when they defeated Division Two (now League One) side Bristol Rovers 2-1 to reach the FA Cup second round for just the second time, before they were defeated by Gillingham 3-0.
