The last few days have raised the rumor that Frank Vogel’s position as coach of the Los Angeles Lakers was in jeopardy. Leaking the news a week ago, it was not until yesterday that LeBron James exonerated his technician, who claimed to take the gossip as part of the job. At the break from what may have been the team’s most convincing game this season, owner Jeanie Buss I make it clear that Vogel is not under management scrutiny. At least for now. “We won’t evaluate Frank’s work until the team is 100 percent healthy.”
The Lakers have been one of the teams hardest hit by injuries at the start of the season. Even before starting, the Los Angeles team already had notable absences. Perhaps most relevant is the loss of LeBron James for almost half of the 25 games they have played, but Vogel’s have had to face prolonged losses from Horton-Tucker, Bazemore, Ellington and Reaves. They are joined by Kendrick Nunn and Trevor Ariza, who have not even debuted and whose return is dated for early January.
Knowing this, the journalists surrounding Buss tried to dig into the matter. I don’t know what you want me to tell you. I’m not going to make any judgments about anything until the team recovers all the players. The owner may perceive that the firing of her coach would go some way to assuming the failure of the season’s planning, but it is strange that such a drastic decision hinges on the return of Kendrick Nunn and Trevor Ariza.
