French President Emmanuel Macron rejected the idea of transferring the remains of Arthur Rimbaud to the Cemetery of the Great in Paris, respecting the opposition of the late poet’s family, despite a petition that supported the transfer request.
“The remains of Arthur Rimbaud will not be removed from the Charleville Mezier family cemetery,” Macron wrote to the family’s lawyer in a letter.
He added: The burial in the Pantheon aims to honor personalities whose commitments contributed to expressing the values of the republic .. I do not wish to go against the will of the late family.
He continued, “Rambo will remain buried alongside his family in the cemetery of Charleville Mezier, his birthplace and the last place he stayed,” describing him as “a major figure in French literature, a very important poet and a rebellious spirit, and his name is a continuous part of the history of France.”
Earlier, Culture Minister Roslyn Bachlow endorsed a petition demanding the transfer of the poet’s remains to the graveyard of greats signed by former culture ministers and other personalities.
For his part, the president of the “Rambo Friends” Association, Alan Tourneau, praised Macron’s decision.
