French President Emmanuel Macron has confirmed that he supports tightening EU restrictions on vaccine exports from pharmaceutical companies that do not fulfill their contractual obligations with the European Union.
“It is the height of naivety. I support the export control mechanisms established by the European Commission, and I support the fact that we must prevent all exports as long as some pharmaceutical companies do not respect their obligations with the Europeans,” he said.
For its part, the European Commission announced on the eve of the summit of the leaders of the Union, that “it has a ready plan in this file because more vaccines produced in the countries of the Union must be made available to their citizens before they are shipped for export.”
In turn, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, warned that the Union would not hesitate to take measures against what she called third-party countries.
She said: “The Union has agreed to export about 41 million doses of the vaccine to 33 countries in the past six weeks, and it is believed that it is at the forefront of international efforts to share vaccines.”
The European Union was criticized at home and abroad for the slow campaign of vaccines, as it provided only about a third of the vaccines needed for its countries.
