Mahomes in the elite of the 5,000 yards

At 27 years old, Patrick Mahomes consolidates his career more and more. The Kansas City quarterback kicked off 2023 by confirming his place in the quarterback trio to surpass 5,000 yards in NFL history.

In addition, it is the second time in his career that he has surpassed this number of yards. He passed for 5,097 yards in 2018 in his MVP season.

In last Sunday’s game against the Broncos in week 17 of the current season, he threw for 328 yards, which strengthened his mark to 5,048 yards and this time, he only needed 16 games to reach the mark. Mahomes won his 11th straight game in 11 tries against the Broncos. Mahomes and Andrew Luck are the only players in the Super Bowl era with more than 10 wins and no losses against a single opponent.

There are only 15 5,000-yard passing seasons in NFL history. Drew Brees and Tom Brady are the only other quarterbacks with multiple 5,000-yard seasons. Brees has done it five times in his career and Brady has done it twice.

“It’s great if you look at the names that are on that list. They’re all-time greats with Drew Brees and Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, so to be part of the list that has those names is a special achievement. And I’m glad to have the people and coaches around me to be able to do it,” Mahomes told USA Today.

Chief Patrick only needs 186 rushing and passing yards to pass Brees (5,562) for the most combined rushing and passing yards in a single season in NFL history.

Brady has two 5,000-yard seasons, having hit his second last season. Brees served six years of 5,000 yards, however he didn’t achieve the first until his eighth season and the second came during his 11th season. Mahomes has accomplished the feat twice in his initial six seasons. Mahomes may not be done collecting milestones and accolades yet this season and in his career.
