Two people have been shot dead in a suspected murder-suicide in the lobby of a Marriott Marquis hotel in Texas.
Officers with the Houston Police Department responded to 911 calls around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday reporting that shots had been fired and quickly found the two bodies in the lobby, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said during a press conference.
‘It is a murder suicide, the gentleman did come in at some point and shot the female then immediately shot himself,’ Finner said.

Finner described the alleged shooter as a black man in his late 30s and the victim as a white woman in her late 20s. Cops are working to determine their identities and notify their next of kin before their names can be released.
‘Both of them came in with suitcases, they did have some conversation, which led people to believe they knew each other. … They were probably getting ready to check in the hotel,’ Finner said.
He added that the man and the woman had arrived at the hotel in separate vehicles but ‘immediately started talking to one another.’
The shooting happened within five to ten minutes of them arriving at the hotel, Finner said during the press conference.
Finner said that investigators do not believe the shooting was random, and officials are working to determine the exact nature of the relationship between the suspect and the victim.
Twitter user Melina Jara wrote that she heard the gunshots at the hotel and hid in a storage unit until she was able to leave.
‘There is no other danger to any one at this moment. I want to pray for the victims,’ Finner said.
He said that cops responded quickly because police did not know if the situation still involved an active shooter.
He added that the Marriot Marquis is a ‘fixture’ in the Houston community that hires off-duty police officers.
Finner said: ‘We want to support our businesses. The Marquis has been great to this city. We’re going to stand with them.’
