Chelsea, Manchester United and Bayern Munich are reportedly in a three-way tug of war for the signature of Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria.

The 23-year-old has two years remaining on his contract in Germany, but Gladbach are still believed to be holding out for at least £45million.

European champions Bayern and the Premier League duo will go in for Zakaria next summer as they aim to strengthen their midfield options, according to Bild.

The Swiss international is a holding midfielder and has made 96 appearances for Gladbach since arriving from Young Boys back in 2017.

His continuing rise at club and international level, having earned 28 caps for Switzerland since his debut in 2016, have put top clubs in Europe on red alert.

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea were busy during the summer window, bringing in seven players.

One area of the pitch that the Blues boss did not address were his options in the deep-lying midfield areas, with N’Golo Kante and Jorginho remaining his favoured personnel.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was less active in the transfer market, but still brought in Donny van de Beek from Ajax to bulk up his midfield options.

Fred and Scott McTominay have emerged as his favoured two holding midfielders, but Zakaria could still be considered as an alternative.

The Swiss midfielder could be open to a move, and admitted this year that he is flattered by the interest in him.

He said: ‘The fact that other clubs are dealing with me shows that I perform well.’
