Soder said at a ceremony held on Wednesday that the 35-year-old guard remained humble and honored the Bavarians by participating as an athlete in several humanitarian issues, such as human rights and the organization he founded to help children in need.
“I’m not from Bavaria so I’m surprised,” said Neuer, who came to Munich and Bavaria in 2011 from Schalke and lives on Lake Tegernsee.
Neuer, who won the 2014 World Cup with Germany, was awarded the Order of Merit from his native North Rhine-Westphalia two years ago.
