When the Memphis Grizzlies announced the termination of Marc Gasol’s contract, everything pointed to the fact that in the following hours or days the player would reveal his future. There were several options on the table: try to continue in the NBA, play in the elite of European basketball, end his days in Girona or hang up his shoes permanently. However, after a couple of months the future of the player remains uncertain, and even he does not know what is to come. “Now I have to train and see what I’m going to do.”
From what Marc tells in its appearance on the podcast The Meaning of Birra, his return to the courts will not be at any price. Some franchises and teams have been interested in him since the Grizzlies cut him, but he wouldn’t feel comfortable in any context. «What I demand of myself is not only to be there, but to help and contribute. This demand and rhythm of life carries a toll ». At the moment, the player does not see himself ready enough to play at the highest level, nor does he assume that he will be. “I am at the point of seeing how far I can see myself and see what I want to do when I am in an optimal state” for what he trains in a Girona that already feels like home.
In his words it is implicit to deny the bunch of rumors that have accompanied him recently. “I don’t do what people expect me to do.” Nor does he give any clues as to what goals his preparation is aiming for, although it goes without saying that if he feels up to going back to the NBA, that will be his goal. «I was beginning to not be the way I would like to be and I thought about whether I would be the way I like it again. Can I go back to that level? I don’t know. What are you going to do? I don’t know, training.
Right now training is one more facet of his family and business routine as president of Basketball Girona. The center is not in a hurry to reveal what his next step will be, but once he discovers it, he will surely reveal it with the frankness that characterizes him.
