Married gynaecologist who wrote fake Viagra prescriptions is suspended

A married doctor has been suspended for six months for writing fake prescriptions to get free Viagra while having an affair.

Consultant gynaecologist Dr Harsit Tejura lied about acquiring 30 packs of the pills to save £360 while having an extra marital affair.

The doctor was caught after a Tesco pharmacy manager became suspicious of his frequent visits and alerted the police.

Father-of-three Tejura, of Old St Mellons, Cardiff, admitted fraud by false representation and theft at Cardiff Crown Court last year and was fined £1,000 but avoided jail.

At the time of the trial he also had his wife, Dr Amanda O’Leary, also a gynaecologist, by his side as he walked into court.

However, the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service has now found his fitness to practice was ‘impaired’ by his actions.

He was suspended from work for six months.

Prosecutor Rosamund Rutter said the manager at the Tesco supermarket found it ‘unusual’ for a doctor to collect prescriptions on behalf of patients.

Cardiff Crown Court heard Tejura’s career was in ruins after he ‘damaged the high degree of trust placed in doctors’. 

Ms Rutter said: ‘He said he was suffering from high levels of stress due to his home and personal life and suffered erectile dysfunction as a result.

‘He admitted engaging in extra-marital sex at the time.’ 

Judge Richard Williams said he had ‘changed his mind’ about sending the consultant to prison over the case because there was no commercial gain in acquiring the sex enhancement pills.

The judge told him: ‘The Viagra could have been prescribed over the counter albeit not in the same volumes you prescribed for yourself.

The court heard he could have legally purchased Viagra, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, but ‘not in the same volume’.

Police raided his office at the Centre for Reproduction and Gynaecology Wales in Llantrisant, South Wales, where they found he had stolen the anaesthetic Fentanyl and another controlled drug.

The ‘devoted father’ resigned as a director of the Centre for Reproduction and Gynaecology Wales. 

The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service suspended Tejura for six months, and imposed an immediate order of suspension to cover the 28-day appeal period.

It also said a review hearing should take place.
