Mystery surrounds the discovery of two human bones at a popular South Australian beach.

A beachgoer contacted police after spotting a bone at Maslin Beach, in Adelaide, during an evening stroll on Tuesday.

Examinations suggest it is a human forearm.

Southern District police then conducted a preliminary search on Wednesday, where they found another bone about 50m from the first discovery.

An extensive search was organised on Thursday, with the assistance of Water Operations Unit, Forensic Science and SES volunteers.

The search team scoured about a kilometre of the beach but failed to find any further items of significance.

The search has since concluded and Forensic Services will examine the bones over the next few days.

Detective Chief Inspector Scott Fitzgerald told reporters the member of the public who first discovered the bone decided to take it home.

‘One of his relatives with some medical training believed it might have been human, and it was presented to us yesterday (Wednesday) morning,’ he said.

‘We suspect that bone is a human bone which is relatively recent in the scheme of things, even up to a couple of months or a year old … the advice we have received is, it is not an ancient bone.’

Mr Fitzgerald also said the second bone located is believed to be a rib.

Anyone who finds any bones along the southern beaches particularly in the areas of Maslin Beach, Seaford, Moana, Southport and Port Noarlunga is urged to contact police.
