A Friday snowstorm covered the state in snow as fall officially turned to winter.
With the dust settled on Saturday — the winter solstice and the shortest day of the year — the town of Milton had the highest reported snowfall total at 6.5 inches, according to the National Weather Service.
Weather officials were predicting five inches of snow from an offshore storm on Friday. Several communities in and around Boston — and some to the north — saw that or a bit more, according to snowfall totals reported to the National Weather Service.
Communities in Central and Western Massachusetts saw less snow, as well as on the South Shore.
