Mavericks fans are married at HALFTIME of Dallas’ loss to the Timberwolves

While NBA games have increasingly become the setting for real-life marriage proposals, Monday’s Mavericks-Timberwolves matchup in Dallas was the venue for an actual wedding.

A little more than a year after Mavericks fan Reid Malone proposed to his girlfriend Ellyn Piatt at American Airlines Center, the two were officially wed at halftime on Monday with some help from team play-by-play announcer Mark Followill.

‘Reid and Ellyn will now exchange rings as a symbol of love and commitment to each other,’ Followill, the officiant, told the crowd of 20,325. ‘It is the seal of the vows you have just taken to love each other without end.’

The couple swapped rings, repeated the vows, and shared a theatrical kiss to the delight of the Mavericks faithful.

‘By the power vested in me and with 20,000…as witnesses, it’s my delight to declare you husband and wife,’ Followill said to round of applause.

‘Mavs fans,’ Followill exclaimed, ‘please welcome Reid and Ellyn Malone!’

The Mavericks reportedly arranged to have the ceremony at a game after the couple was engaged at American Airlines Center in December of 2021, according to WFFA Dallas. Reid and Ellyn also received a gift card from the team as a wedding gift. 

Unfortunately for the happy couple, the Mavericks lost 124-121 as Dallas’ Kyrie Irving-Luka Doncic union got off to a rocky start. Still, the pair combined for 69 points on 25-of-43 shooting.

The happy couple did get to enjoy their first dance on center court before the Mavs fell to the Timberwolves. 

Malone is a teacher and high school volleyball coach, according to a post on the Springdale Athletics (Texas) Facebook account. Ellyn is listed as a n Associate Merchant with Walmart, according to her LinkedIn profile.

‘Been working NBA games for 16 years,’ tweeted Timberwolves broadcaster Michael Grady. ‘Seen a number of engagements… This is the first halftime wedding I’ve ever seen.’
