(Trends Wide) — Visiting Israel, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Republican Kevin McCarthy, promised that if President Joe Biden does not invite Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Washington soon, he will.
McCarthy called Netanyahu a “dear friend” in an interview with the Israel Today newspaper, which supports Netanyahu, on Sunday.
Biden has so far refused to extend a White House invitation to Netanyahu amid a national Israeli controversy over the Netanyahu government’s attempts to reform the country’s judicial system.
McCarthy will become the first speaker of the House of Representatives to address Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, since Newt Gingrich in 1998.
McCarthy landed in Israel on Sunday on his first foreign trip as House speaker, hailing his arrival “for the special bond that unites our nations.”
Upon his arrival in Israel, McCarthy noted that he had visited Israel more times than any other country.
Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana greeted McCarthy saying, “I look forward to working together between us that will strengthen and fortify the connection between our two parliaments.”
McCarthy leads a delegation of 16 other members of Congress. This Monday he is scheduled to visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust museum before his speech to the Knesset that same day.
