“The Hill” newspaper reported that National Guard members took off their camouflage jackets and replaced them with black ones, in a specific symbol of the type of security operation entrusted to them in the face of demonstrations by Trump supporters.
The National Guard in the capital announced that they would change the colors of their jackets from January 5 to 7 as thousands of supporters of President Donald Trump flock to the city to protest against Congressional ratification of President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory.
National Guard spokesman Tinacci Machona said the change in colors highlights the different missions being carried out, and the camouflage vests are being replaced with black ones during local support operations, such as responding to protests.
He added, “The black identification jacket is neither a body shield nor a tactical jacket. It represents the traditional uniform worn by members of the National Guard in the capital in many local operations, including during the presidential inauguration, response to the Corona epidemic and the Fourth of July celebration.”
