Mees Brace Compounds Bochum’s Misery

VfL Bochum’s difficult start to the 2. Bundesliga season continued on the fourth matchday with a 2-1 home defeat against Preußen Münster. The loss marks the third of the young season for the recently relegated and largely ineffective Bochum side.

Joshua Mees was the hero for the visitors, scoring a brace in the 27th and 49th minutes to secure the victory. A 43rd-minute own goal by Münster’s Jano ter Horst provided a temporary equalizer for Bochum. With this result, Münster extends its unbeaten streak to three league games, celebrating a second consecutive win.

The hosts began the match brightly, with Francis Onyeka forcing an early save from Preußen goalkeeper Johannes Schenk just two minutes in. While Bochum attempted to control the game, Münster kept the contest balanced and nearly took the lead in the 13th minute, but Marvin Schulz’s shot went just wide.

The game’s action was largely confined to the midfield until the 27th minute, when Münster’s Schulz played a clever through ball to Mees. The forward beat defender Felix Passlack in a one-on-one, cut inside, and fired a powerful shot into the far corner past keeper Timo Horn to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Münster remained the more active team, and Oliver Batista Meier nearly doubled the advantage from 20 meters out in the 37th minute.

Just before halftime, Bochum found an equalizer seemingly out of nowhere. Felix Passlack delivered a sharp cross from the right flank intended for Philipp Hofmann. However, ter Horst, in an attempt to clear, unfortunately turned the ball into his own net. The goal was initially disallowed for offside but was correctly awarded after a VAR review.

Münster responded decisively to the setback early in the second half. In the 49th minute, Mees collected the ball in midfield, advanced unchallenged, and unleashed a shot from 25 meters that found the net via the inside of the right post to restore his team’s lead.

The goal visibly affected Bochum. Münster weathered a brief period of pressure from the hosts before the game’s intensity faded. The visitors defended with discipline, while Bochum struggled to create any meaningful opportunities. Despite increasing the risk in the final stages, Bochum failed to threaten Münster’s lead. Their best chance of the second half fell again to Onyeka, who was once more denied by the in-form Schenk.

Following the international break, VfL Bochum will travel to Paderborn on September 12. Preußen Münster will host Düsseldorf on September 14.
