An officer concerned in the arrest of Tyre Nichols — a Black gentleman who was severely crushed by police in Memphis, Tennessee, and afterwards died — has been “relieved of responsibility,” authorities stated on Monday.
Officer Preston Hemphill is now on compensated administrative go away “pending the outcome of the investigation,” a spokesman for the Memphis Police Section informed Insider.
Hemphill joined the Memphis Law enforcement Section in 2018.
It was not right away obvious what purpose Hemphill performed in the arrest of Tyre Nichols.
Authorities say 29-12 months-old Nichols was brutally crushed by 5 now-fired Memphis Police Division police officers during a traffic quit on January 7.
Nichols, a father, was hospitalized in critical affliction and died a few times later.
The five other law enforcement officers — Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Justin Smith, and Desmond Mills Jr. — were fired and indicted previous week on murder and other prices in link to Nichols’ dying.
