Mercado Libre encourages climate action in Latin America

Specialists consider that there is a planetary emergency, mainly due to the danger of the climate crisis and greater social inequality. Even during COP 27, Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the international community seeks to generate agreements on fundamental elements such as reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG), energy transition or climate funds.

In a conversation with Guadalupe Marín, Mercado Libre’s director of Sustainability, she mentions that there are great climate challenges and opportunities in Latin America, which is why it is necessary to implement possible solutions to undertake climate action in the region.

Projects

“A few days ago, within the framework of the Latin America Climate Summit, we launched the call for the Regenera América 2023 Program, which already has 18 million dollars committed, as we seek to continue incorporating projects that contribute to the conservation and regeneration of biomes in Latin America. and even, investments are defined based on the company’s carbon footprint”, mentioned Marín. He explained that the selection criteria for this edition will emphasize:

• Projects for the conservation and/or restoration of native ecosystems. Benefits to the native biodiversity of the place.

• Benefits to the local communities of the place.

• New or existing projects with expansion capacity.

• Ability to be part of a carbon project.

He said that biomes play a fundamental role in the well-being of people and the planet, helping to reduce climate change thanks to the fact that they capture and store the carbon that we emit into the atmosphere, which allows the planet to continue growing in a healthy way. .

“With Regenera America we focus on Latin America because this region is home to around 40% of the planet’s biodiversity. Science ensures that one of the most efficient ways to deal with climate change and its effects is to recover and protect forests and other biomes natural resources that play a fundamental role in the well-being of people and the planet”, he said.

“With our eyes set on the future and to consolidate our commitment to conservation and regeneration, we want to continue adding projects to Regenera America and, above all, we want to contribute by expanding the possibilities and stimulating initiatives that protect our biodiversity and climate, empowering communities and environmental leaders in the most strategic biomes of the region”, he mentioned.

Mexico

Mercado Libre presents for the first time a campaign to promote products of Mexican biodiversity, “Biomes of Latin America at a click”. This first edition will bring together close to 1,500 sustainable items made by producers that contribute to the appreciation and preservation of two Mexican biomes: Temperate Forest of Oaxaca and Chiapas.

“In association with Fundación Avina and Fundación Giral, Mercado Libre wants to connect consumers with producers of sociobiodiversity, facilitating the online purchase of products that generate income for local populations and preserving the biomes where they are found. We even created a page exclusively for the campaign, users will have access to food items, fashion, decoration and handicrafts”, concluded the company’s director of sustainability.

Applications for the Regenera América 2023 Program can be made until December 9, where they will participate in a joint selection process between Mercado Libre and Pachama (a technology company focused on restoring nature to resolve climate change), a strategic partner in the implementation of the program for the selection, articulation and follow-up of the projects. Selected projects will be announced in April 2023.
