Mercedes-Benz will produce electric batteries at its plants in Germany, Romania and China in 2024

German luxury car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz announced this Wednesday that it will start producing batteries and electric motors in 2024 at its plants in Germany, Romania and China.

The Stuttgart group plans to invest some 5 billion euros in its European engine production plants, according to a statement.

The German plants in Kamenz (Saxony), Brühl (Baden-Württemberg) and Beijing (China) will produce battery systems for future entry-level and mid-range electric models.

It is planned to build another battery assembly center in Kölleda (Thuringia), where Mercedes manufactures, among other things, combustion engines, a decision that will depend on the amount of the subsidy that the region receives.

Power units of the same models will be manufactured in Untertürkheim (Baden-Württemberg), in Sebes (Romania) and in Beijing from 2024.

The plants in Hamburg and Metingen (Baden-Württemberg) will continue with the current assembly of axles and electrical components.

Powerful electric motors for the future platform of the AMG sports car will be manufactured in Berlin in the middle of the decade.

Mercedes-Benz has a total of fourteen engine and component production plants around the world, which are being transformed as a result of vehicle electrification.

By 2025, plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles are expected to account for about half of sales, according to the automaker.
