Mexican Caribbean beaches are suitable for recreational use: Cofepris

Cancun, QR. Due to the beginning of the winter vacation period, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (cofepris) reported the results of the seawater monitoring carried out in the Caribbean beaches Mexicano are suitable for recreational use.

In fact, the monitoring was applied in 16 coastal states of the country, in coordination with the state health authorities and the National Network of Public Health Laboratories.

The authorities took samples of seawater during the weeks prior to the current holiday period, in order to obtain the geometric mean and generate a statistical value that allows indicating whether or not a beach represents a health risk.

The federal agency evaluated seven beaches in cancunnine in Cozumeltwo in Women Islandsix in Riviera Mayaone in Othon P. Blancoand three in Tulumwith a total of 36 sampling sites, which showed that all the beaches are suitable.

Total, cofepris endorsed 258 beaches in Mexico as suitable for recreational use, out of 259 evaluated; while beach Rosaritolocated in the state of Baja California, exceeded the established limits of 200 enterococci per 100 milliliters of water.

Rosarito was determined as unfit by the state and municipal authorities themselves, to prevent possible health risks, due to the concentration of this microorganism found during the sampling.

Likewise, it is reported that the results of the samplings that are still being carried out on 31 beaches in Guerrero will be added in the coming days. These results will be made known, as an exercise in transparency, through the Cofepris website.

The institutions determine if a beach is suitable or not, based on the guidelines established by the World Health Organization (WHO), and it is carried out following the operational manual for the monitoring of primary contact water in seawater from beaches and freshwater bodies.
