Mexican delegation will travel to EU to seek to recover Category 1 of air security: AMLO

High-level authorities from Mexico will travel to the United States over the weekend to talk with representatives of the neighboring nation about the possible recovery of the Aviation Safety Category 1lost last year, said the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

In May 2021, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA, for its acronym in English) announced the reduction of the rating, which prevents Mexican airlines from adding new flights to the United States and limits their ability to seal commercial agreements.

“This weekend, the person in charge of the Ministry of Communications, the undersecretary and the person in charge of Aviation are going to travel to Washington because there is a meeting they have in the United States to try to return the highest category,” said AMLO .

The Mexican government has said that it hopes to recover the status in the shortest possible time. Until June, the authorities of both countries had met seven times to discuss the issue.

In 2010, Mexico, the most frequent destination for US travelers, suffered a similar reduction for alleged deficiencies in the institution responsible for civil aviation, but then the restriction lasted about four months.
