(Trends Wide) — The Mexican-made Modelo Especial is the best-selling beer in the United States for the second month in a row, once again taking the crown from Bud Light.
In the four weeks ending July 1, Modelo Especial accounted for 8.7% of total beer sales, compared with 7% for Bud Light, according to NIQ data provided to consultancy Bump Williams.
Dollar sales for the period leading up to July 4 remained dismal for Bud Light, down 28.5%, while Modelo grew 8.5% over the same period.
Bud Light initially lost the title last month, which it has widely held for two decades. The beer has been struggling following the start of the Dylan Mulvaney controversy, when he sent the transgender influencer a personalized can of Bud Light, which she posted on Instagram. Right-wing media and anti-trans commentators on social media unleashed a fury of negative attention and hate. Anheuser-Busch’s lackluster response also angered LGBTQ+ advocates.
In June, Bud Light launched a new marketing campaign focused on country music and NFL players to help boost sales. AB has also started advertising with a campaign targeting its farmers, delivery men and waiters, some of whom have been subjected to threats following the transphobic backlash.
However, Bud Light remains the country’s best-selling beer so far this year, with an 8.7% share of the beer market. Modelo, according to Williams, is gradually closing the gap and has a share of 8.1%.
Modelo’s parent company, New York-based Constellation Brands, recently reported strong results. Its brewing business, which also includes Corona, posted an 11% sales increase in the first quarter.
Greg Gallagher, Constellation’s vice president of brand marketing, recently told Trends Wide that Modelo has been “enjoying an incredible run of success” over the past few years and said he wants to replicate the dominance it has among the broader Hispanic drinker demographic. “Our growth is about keeping that core, but also attracting non-Hispanic customers, and we’re having incredible success.”
