Mexico advanced payment of foreign debt to the IDB

The government of Mexico reported that it made a debt prepayment to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for 896 million pesos, which is equivalent to 45.2 million dollars.

This operation is part of the strategy of the Mexican government administration to reduce the external debt for an orderly financial transition.

According to the federal government, this transaction allows for the early payment of two IDB loans. An operation that makes it possible to reduce short-term debt maturities scheduled for the year 2025.

Information contained on the IDB website shows that Mexico’s active loan portfolio with the multilateral amounts to 2,299 million dollars. This means that the effort of the public administration to make an advance payment cancels 1.96% of these obligations.

In the statement of the Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) details that the net indebtedness with international financial organizations represents only half of what was made in the first four years of the previous government and is 80% less than what was contracted in the same period of the previous administration.
