The Inter-American Court of Human Rights determined that the Mexican State is responsible for serious errors in the investigation of the death of the activist Digna Ochoa two decades ago, so he must continue with the investigations.
Ochoa, who received numerous death threats before appearing dead with gunshot wounds to her body, was a lawyer who defended, among other cases, complaints of human rights violations allegedly committed by civilian and military security forces.
After the death of the activist in October 2001, the investigations initially pointed to a murder, but later prosecutors directed the investigation to a possible suicide, so the case was considered closed.
The Inter-American Court of Human Rights He said in a statement Wednesday that there were “numerous shortcomings in the management of the crime scene” as well as in the medicolegal autopsy.
“The “absolutely deficient” investigation of his death by the Mexican authorities did not shed light on the particular circumstances surrounding his death and, therefore, constituted, in itself, a violation of the obligation to guarantee the right to lady life Digna Ochoa“, he detailed.
Mexico must investigate and eventually judge those possibly responsible for the death, in addition to carrying out a public act of assumption of responsibility at the international level, he added.
