Mexico’s commitment must be to increase the production of electricity from clean technologies, because otherwise it will lose the opportunity for Europe, Canada, the US and other countries to acquire the cars manufactured here.”
Carlos Zarlenga, President and CEO of Stellantis Mexico.
Mexico has the potential to become an industrial leader in global electrification, as long as it rides the wave of transition to clean energies and zero emissions, in which different actors participate, from the federal government to suppliers to the automotive industry, he assured. Carlos Zarlenga, President and CEO of Stellantis Mexico.
Although he did not define the number of investments that Stellantis will make in Mexico for the electrical conversion in its assembly plants, the president of the automaker said that the next three years will be key for Mexico, since a “rain of investments” is expected for the development of electrification and deepening of suppliers in the production chain. By participating in the Automotive Forum 2022, organized by the AMDA, the CEO of Stellantis urged the country to focus on moving from the internal combustion ecosystem of vehicles to electrification.
Zarlenga referred that the development of mobility, “is something that cannot be done only by OEMs (car assemblers), the ecosystem is made up of suppliers, companies, government, states. If Mexico seizes that opportunity and turns the internal matrix into an electric one, it will lead and multiply by 3 or 4 times and will lead the world in that sense, with that electrification”, he highlighted.
In automotive matters, he said, Mexico has quality, efficiency and competitiveness. The CEO of the automaker that emerged from the merger of FCA and Grupo Peugeot stressed that Mexico “has three things: it is one of the largest automotive exporters; second, it has a domestic market that can become the world’s top ten and thirdly, it has a domestic production with a captive market with ample possibilities to sell”. Therefore, he said, the great challenge is to participate in an integral way in the infrastructure change.
